我需要一个可以编写自我话语的空间,捕捉其中的讯息,以描绘出除了表述之外的思绪。无论是毁灭性的,自控的抑或是被赋予的。在三条不同的时间线里,我变成了几个“人”——此刻短暂地离开了的起居室的“主人”,贯穿图像中的那个“人”,和那些旧照片里的“她”。我们保持互相遥望的距离的同时,我们之间刻意或无意的交错又为重组经验提供线索。

在与她们的对话中,在这里我并不想找出事实或真相,而是关注如何面对创伤和“想要成为什么样的自己”。我以扮演的方式再现妈妈旧时的照片和从二手市场买到的旧照片,从扮演中获得真实体感,也想试验这些女性形象在当下以什么样子存在。


那些记录日常的片段,则与我观看这些素材时的影像形成了反复的观看和被观看。反复是辨认讯息的其中一种方法。身体经验和行为的主体需要通过这种方法去辨认,并且需要不断地选择,辨认身边环境的讯息和人与人的关系,确认话语及行动的主体。


从观察自己与妈妈的相处到自我观察,妈妈接受被观察的原因可能只是为了获得与女儿对话的机会,而我的观察事实上是为了再次辨认所受到的教育,包括来自家庭、学校、爱人、朋友、知识和经验,她们身上的痕迹是如何流到了我的身上。这个过程给予我从抽离的角度观察,跳脱悲剧化的眼光和自负的猜测。但这并不是关于观察家庭与女儿的,而是内观的,也关于话语如何存在生活与视野和听觉里。

Seemingly Harmless

I need a space to construct a self-discourse, capture the messages in it, to depict the thoughts that beyond speech, whether it is devastating, self-controlled, or affiliated. I became three different ‘persons’ in three timelines. I am the host of the living room, who has just temporary left. I am the ‘person’ in these images. I am her, in those old photos. We interlace willingly or involuntarily meanwhile we look at each other in distance. It provides clues to the reconstruction of experience.


In the conversation with them, it isn’t meant to find the facts or truth. My concern is on the process of facing trauma and how we manifest our desire. I act as my mother and other person in those old photos to get genuine experience, to explore how these female images represent in today’s world.


The materials recorded daily life, the images of me watching these materials, together they create an experience of watching and being watched repeatedly. The to and fro is one of ways to identify messages. Subjects of experience and acts need to be identified by it, constantly chosen by it. It is a way to identify messages from surrounding environment and the relationship between people. It also confirms the subject of discourse and actions.


From observing my relationship with my mother and self-observation, I believe my mother accepts being observed, only to find a chance to talk to daughter, while in my case, it is to identify my education, including the education I obtained from my family, school, friends, knowledge and experience, how the traces on them passed down on me. The process of it allows me to observe from a detached perspective without miserable insight and conceited speculation. It isn’t about observing a family and their daughter, but to observe oneself, to observe how discourse exist and survive in vision and hearing.

陈嘉璐,1992年生,现生活工作于广州,2015年毕业于伦敦艺术大学切尔西艺术学院,获纯艺术学士学位,2016-2017年为黄边站年度研究员。


About the Artist

Jialu Chen, Born in 1992, live and work in Guangzhou, graduated and obtained a BA (Hons) in Fine Art from Chelsea College of Arts, University of the Arts London in 2015, became a researcher of HB Station between 2016-2017.
